PLANTING SNAKE PLANTS
Where to grow:
Snake plants can be grown almost anywhere that has some sort of light source. They love indirect sunlight in areas of the home where they can stand out. If placing outdoors only allow a little bit of direct sunlight as that will scorch the leaves. Shaded outdoor areas are great.
Temperature and humidity:
The best room temperatures can range between 65° to 80° F. However, snake plants can stand warmer temperatures outdoors as long as it is in the shade. Humidity is not an issue as snake plants can tolerate a wide range of humidity levels. They are sensitive to cold temperatures though.
Soil type:
Thrives best in a well-draining potting mix that includes perlite. Make sure the soil is light.
Pot requirements:
Be sure to choose a pot that is wide enough to be stable. As a snake plant grows taller, it can become top heavy. Whatever type of pot you use, make sure it has holes in the bottom for proper drainage.
SNAKE PLANT CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Watering:
It’s always better to err on the dry side, since overwatering can lead to root rot. Pretty much the only thing you can do to kill a snake plant is to give it too much water. If the leaves begin to turn yellow or get soft and mushy at the base, that’s usually a sign of overwatering and poor soil drainage.
Fertilizing:
Although they’re fine with little or no fertilizer, they will be more robust if given an all-purpose houseplant fertilizer diluted to half the recommended rate. Do not fertilize in winter.
Pruning:
Snake plants do not need a lot of pruning unless it has a dying or damaged leaf. Make sure to prune off the entire leaf at the soil surface or it will not regenerate from the cut point.
Repotting:
Snake plant doesn’t mind being snug in its pot, but it’s still a good idea to repot it every two or three years to refresh the soil and improve drainage. If the pot size is adequate, simply place your plant back into the same pot filled with fresh soil.
Pests:
Can include mealybugs or scale. Wipe affected areas with a swab or cotton ball dipped in 70% rubbing alcohol, or apply insecticidal soap. If soil stays too wet over a period of time, it may attract fungus gnats.
